Contribute to non-chlorine pool directory

The Healthier Swimming Directory has moved to piscinasana.wikidot.com in order to provide a clearer, searchable directory as well as interactive forums.

Why the change? Since this directory project began three years ago, the number of locations of safer, non- or low-chlorine pools listed here has expanded to the point that it's difficult to scan for locations in the blog format. The new directory will make it easier to find pools in your area.

This blog exists to create a free directory of chlorine-free/low-chlorine swimming pools.

The directory has grown to over 90 locations with the help of people world-wide!

Please post locations of ozone/salt/uv/other treated pools open to the public.

Click on 'comments' to add information. Please include websites if possible. I will compile and post the information over time.

Pool water is disinfected outside the pool using either a two-vessel Ozone Treatment system or an Ultra Violet light treatment system.

Salt-water pools are not really chlorine-free, so I don't think you should include them at all on your list.

See http://phoenix.about.com/cs/wet/a/saltpool01.htm
"Salt-water pools are NOT chlorine free pools. A salt-water pool is simply one that utilizes a chlorine generator."

good point about saltwater pools not being chlorine free. interestingly though, i have read that people who are "allergic" to chlorine don't have problems in saltwater pools. and there aren't problems with stinging eyes and chlorine smell. so even though saltwater pools use salt to generate chlorine, there is something about the process that creates a less noxious environment albeit not a chlorine-free one. so, i think they still have a place in this directory as an alternative to the norm (with a note pointing out that saltwater is not chlorine free). maybe there's a more accurate title i can use instead of "chlorine-free swimming" for the directory though. any ideas? thanks for raising your concern, anonymous.

Please add: www.necon.de the first company to introduce the 100% chemical free ionisation system, this water has drinking water quality and it would be wrong to dismiss this company. All other ionisation companies as pristineblue and others due add chemicals into their pools. They are chlorine free but not chemical free. See the descriptions of pristine blu. shock treatment, carrier and so on. Where are the ingriedents?

Re: chlorine-free pools in the UK: I phoned swiss cottage pool in london, and they said it is not an ozone-treated pool, but is a mixture of UV and chlorine. A lot of pools use this UV-chlorine combination (I've been phoning round lots of places in london - am yet to find somewhere chlorine-free). Does anyone know how much less chlorine it contains than a chlorine-only pool?

Hello, I'm desperate for an ozone or salt water pool to use in west London (somewhere around Gloucester Road). There is the Ethos centre at Imperial college but it costs £500pa OFFPEAK! Many thanks for any help. J

In the UK Holmes Place have ozone treated pools in many of their clubs but this is probably equally expensive if you only use it for swimming.

The ADA hotel in North Cyprus has a chlorine free pool it is truly wonderful to swim in, they use a product from www.poolsanuk.com Fhemi the manager tells me many of the other good hotels are turning over to the product for the next season

I live in South Africa and lots of the Virgin Active clubs have salt water pools. Also NaCl pool are different from pools with chlorine because the salt forms an equilibrium with the Na and Cl so the Cl doesnt come out of solution as easily and Cl is most harmful as a gas.

If you want to reduce chlorine levels use a copper/silver ionization system. This is a great alternative. The recommended lower chlorine level of 0.6 ppm makes the pool seem chlorine free but you will still have the instant kill that chlorine offers

Poolsanuk.com the product these guys sell is a copper/silver ionazation system in a bottle, with no hardware costs or instalation it is so simple to use and very stable

I have been on holiday in northen cyprus for two weeks and spent a few days at the Vaha Spa near Girne. I suffer from skin problems and normally i can not go swimming in pools with the fear of my skin imflaming and i was told that the swimming pool there does not use chlorine but a product call poolsan as mentioned on the site. It is fantastic! the water is so soft and clear you can not smell anything!the best way to describe it is that it is like swimming in mineral water!I was also told that quite a few hotels in northen cyprus are using the product and some pool companies are also turning over to this product as well. I can not wait to go back again and swim in the pool again. http://www.vaha-spa.com

The water is ozone-treated and as far as I know, it's the only one in the area, although another one is under construction in Quiberon, a famous holiday resort not far from here.

UK Chlorine free pools
Leatherhead Leisure Centre in Surrey has just completed 14 month trial under the British Health Protection Agency of the chlorine free product Poolsan. www.poolsanuk.com

Anonymous said...

Hi - I use Leatherhead every week and I think it is brilliant - the diving pool has no chlorine in at all and you can swim in it at any time when there are no classes there. It's a bit deep for small children but hopefully they will make the kids pool chlorine free soon. I don't know why anyone uses chlorine because this poolsan stuff is fab - it's like swimming in bottled water - better even than tap water.

There are around 100 ocean pools along the coast of the Australian state of New South Wales. For more details, see my website
http://www.nswoceanbaths.info

Like the population, most of those of those sea baths where the waves can wash into the pool are clustererd in the strip from Newcastle, south to Sydney and Wollongong. They are standard features of Sydney's surf beaches.

Most of the ocean pools are unfenced, unsupervised, have no admission charges and are available for use at all hours, as they are considered important beach safety measures on a coast with many dangerous rips. Some of those pools are Olympic-size and a few are much larger.

The beautiful "Holsten-Therme" in D-Kaltenkirchen (Germany) uses a combination of Ozone-treatment and chlorine.
It works out pretty well as I personally have no problems with the water or air here which I have in other chlorine-only pools:

Thanks for this site. I need to find a chlorine free pool in South Bucks/South Herts area UK. Any ideas anyone? I'm a pensioner so sadly cant afford Health Club prices any more.
BTW Holmes Place leisure centres were bought by Virgin Active a couple of years ago who then sold some off. Difficult to find out from VA which of their pools are still chlorine free so do check first.

I am chlorine sensitive and have always avoided swimming since high school. Just the strong smell of chlorine around swimming pools makes me anxious. I was very excited to learn of ozone purified pools in our area as I could swim with my daughter. However, it seems that the smell of chlorine from the ozone pools is just as strong as regular pools. My daughter seems to smell as strongly of chlorine after swimming in the ozone pools as in others. The first time I asked about this I was told the ozonator was not functioning. After weeks of this I was told that ozone purified pools require "some" chlorine. I really don't want to be a Bobbie Bummer but I always thought that in order for chlorine to be as effective as one would like a certain level must be reached whether or not other (ozone) disinfection has been used or not. Can someone please tell me if I'm wrong and how I can tell whether less chlorine is being used (when the ozonator actually functions)? Also any suggestions beside participating in this great site how one can help increase chlorine-free-ness in our public pools? I just want to participate comfortably in swimming with my daughter.

I just called Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA. I spoke with the Men's Swimming Coach/Sports Information contact, whose name is Danny Johnson (714) 895-8344. http://www.gwc.info/athletics/contact.html. He stated that their pool has ALWAYS contained chlorine. Sorry, BUT--No big reason to have this pool listed in your blog, just because the water is ozone purified...They are still chlorinating that pool. HELP! THIS SUCKS! California--the 8th ranking economy in the world. We can't even have non-chlorinated pools. What's the point? What good is any of it? VERY FRUSTRATED.

I've had real problems swimming in chlorinated pools to the extent where my breathing and skin were affected so much that I had to stop using public pools. I now swim exclusively in the sea for the May-Oct months. Recently I have had a knee op and as part of my rehabilitation have been using a pool. The old problems have returned and this led to me visiting your site. I used to use a fantastic pool in Axminster, Devon (UK) called the Flamingo Pool where I had no chlorine allergy problems. I no longer live in the area but have just visited their site where they state that the pool water is UV treated and the amount of chlorine used is 1/3 of the normal level (I'm looking for a similar pool in London if anyone knows of one).
Hope this helps and keep up the good work.
